Martinez Hillard, the sole member of thesistermaria., has been writing songs, perfoming live throughout the Midwest and releasing albums under the aforementioned moniker since the spring of 2001.
He has lived in Topeka, KS for 12 years, home of the 1970's band Kansas, indoor football team The Topeka Knights, The World Famous Topeka Zoo, and Payless ShoeSource World Headquarters. He finds his town boring at times.
He's also lived in Europe and other points of The United States. He misses Frankfurt & Wiesbaden, Germany quite a bit. Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee & Texas have all been called "home" by Hillard at one point in his 21 years.
He made an ep in November 2001 called The Apart Meant EP. At the time, he thought it was good...but it wasn't. He spent the spring of 2002 hiding. Then he completed his first full-length album with his buddy Bret Palmer in November 2002 and called it Topekamericana. 8 songs & 42 minutes of Byrds-influenced & broken melodies, cheap instruments and rudimentary drum machine patterns brought TSM. critical acclaim as well as touring opportunities. Hillard performed in Arkansas in Jan. '03, Chicago, IL in Oct. '03, and Lincoln & Omaha, NE in Nov. '03.
Well-received and newly confident, he returned to a home studio set-up in February 2004 to begin his third, most personal album, Let Go of | Hold Onto the Gold. With the album nearly finished, he began to stall out, so he started recording other songs for fun. While "Let Go..." was becoming an album full of quiet arrangements & deliberate subject matter, Hillard resolved to make a subsequent release that was quite the opposite.
As Mister Sister & the Sister Family. began to take shape in July 2004, Hillard took his love of the infectious sounds of '80's Top 40 & R&B and the influence of modern pop acts like Joy Electric, Ladytron, Elkland, Fine China, etc. to write short songs with more proficiency and focus than he'd done in the past. He also let his passion for storytelling creep back into his songwriting, making "Mister..." not only a cohesive set of songs, but also a story about a family who is struggling to find a way to keep a business afloat without losing each other in the process.
Hillard plans on releasing Let Go of | Hold Onto the Gold. and Mister Sister & the Sister Family. independently in 2005. He is currently looking for a record label who can help him find a booking agent, help him secure distribution for his future releases and will love him unconditionally.
