Viva Cola Mexicana

Thursday, July 13, 2006

Any of you who have ever had the pleasure of enjoying a nice, cold Coca-cola while in Mexico - straight out of the bottle or in a plastic baggy with straw - will agree with me when I say that Mexican Coke is way better than American Coke.

And many of you probably also know that this is because Mexican Coke is sweetened with cane sugar, whereas American Coke is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup.

Well, while I was walking through the newly expanded Latino food section in Checkers today, I noticed that they have a small collection of "la cosa verdad" - Mexican Coke in bottles. I didn't pick one up, but on the rare occasion that I crave a Coke, I'll know where to go.

Is Checkers the only store in town that has Mexican Coke? If this article has any truth to it, I'd have to say that old Jim Lewis has proven once again that he is a wise businessman.

Perhaps Checkers splits their order with the new Mercado Latino on 23rd Street.. anyone been there yet?

Yet another reason why 'I LOVE my Checkers!'

Hmm...I'm normally not big on sugary soda, but ya got me curious. I'll have to try it sometime.

Gotta love the Checkers.

Tortas de Jalisco.

And you can have it with some awesome food there, too.

Every time I go to visit my mom, I try to come back with a case of original formula Dr. Pepper, for the same reason. None of that corn syrup nonsense, just sugar. If you're ever in Dublin, TX, you can get a fountain DP made out of the original syrup.

Checkers also has a great selection of other Mexican fruit sodas. I try one now and then --- fantastic. And a huge sugar rush.

Where is Mercado Latino?

Mexican Coke is the only Mexican soda I've ever been able to handle. Even Jumex, which contains some fruit juice and has some good flavors, gets to me with its sweetness. Of course, I've never been an orange or grape soda kind of girl.

I do love me some Limon Sabritas (the Mexican brand name for Lays), though. Lays now has a Limon flavor out in the US that I have yet to try. I wonder if , like the Coke, the US recipe is different

I'm not sure I got the name right on the Mercado, but it is in that nondescript strip mall near Taco Bell on 23rd that has (I think) a pawn shop, a nails place, and perhaps an ethnic hair salon? I'm thinking there used to be a baseball card shop there? The details escape me, but hopefully you get the idea.

I have, on occasion, found those small bottles of wonderful Mexican Coke at Hy-Vee (I think), next to the bottles of Jarritos (which I also adore). I knew I loved that stuff, just never had any idea *why*!

And Checkers sells REAL fried pork rinds (complete with rind) another Latin favorite and one my mother-in-law is addicted to (we typically buy her at least 2 packs of those every month)! Let me add my voice to the "Yea Checkers" crowd. I HATE packing up my own groceries (I am old, uncoordinated, and slow; so I must aggravate the heck out of the shoppers coming behind me in line), and it is a large place to traverse if you aren't in great shape (yes, I know, pork rinds don't help one keep in shape), but the selection, freshness and prices make the trouble worth it. Their seafood selection isn't at all good, but why would anyone buy most meats anywhere else? You still have to do price comparisons, but by and large I always do my BIG grocery shopping there - if I can help it! [ Sorry if I sound like I'm related or working for the store; no connections other then customer, I promise! Just want to give credit where it's due]

Checkers is just great all around. Cheapest place in town. Best, best, best produce. Friendly employees.

But they NEED to get a salad bar! (Please nobody go off on how salad bars are "germy." I love them.)

I have actually known a few grocery store salad bar employees in my time, and not a one would eat at their own salad bar.

That said, I'm still a salad bar lover, and would use one at Checkers regularly. That doesn't seem to be their thing, though.
