LOST thoughts

Friday, May 30, 2008

Well, since there have been a few times that the comment boards have gotten absolutely taken over by LOST conversation, I figured it would be down right friendly like of me to start off with it. Who knows? Maybe the comment boards will get taken over with cultural analysis or caturday pictures. Plus, I'm curious what people thought.

And by the way, I don't care about spoilers, so if you do you should stop reading. Besides, the damned thing was on free TV, so if you're a fan you should've seen it by now.

I was really impressed with last night's 3 hours of LOST. After Sawyer's jump from the helicopter, I had to step away from the group to think about how much every thing was unraveling, and how steady handed this show has been since the end was announced. On top of the high standard of normal episodes, LOST's season openers and finale's have always been spot on when it comes to answering questions while opening up whole new puzzles. As I said last night to Chavis, I don't care if during the season it's all Kate all the time, as long as they can deliver bookends that are this good. To think that I only get to experience it four more times is a little sad.

Of course, this is no special opinion. A large chunk of the world's population watches LOST with the same baited enthusiasm that I do, many are even more rabid about the endless minutia contained within. Getting addicted from the pilot through last night's episode is not a distinct occurrence. My love letter to the creators, writers, and producers is not what you are reading for though, I am sure. Let's get on to the nerd talk!

Ahem. I think that finally the importance of the Swan hatch's destruction has been fully explained. It seems clear to me that releasing the energy of the island at regular intervals kept it constantly moving, and losing that push allowed it to be found by Widmore (both of them). Speaking of, I'm starting to think that Widmore must have been the old leader of the island. He moved it, and was teleported off, and spent the rest of his life trying to find it again. Then Ben moved it, shoved off (which I wish they had shown), leaving Locke in his place. Maybe that's part of what brings Locke back to the mainland, because it was moved again. Turns out that Mirror Matter guy might be pretty dead on, eh?

Speaking of the island moving, where the hell does the show take place now? And when? Ben is all over the place, space and time wise. The biggest detail missing from the three years after they came home is why Locke visited them and what he said (to come back, I would guess), but otherwise they're back in what ever the "real" world is. Faraday was in the water when the island went poof. The Losties and Others are... i don't even know.

I think Jin is dead.

I think Michael is finally dead, with Christian "letting him go". And the whole bomb in his face thing.

I am shocked that we didn't see the one eyed Russian this season.

Sawyer and Juliet are leading the beach now. Maybe Rose, though, with all that attitude over her peanuts.

I'm hoping Faraday traveled with the island, as he was getting to be the most intriguing character to me.

They never explained who Abaddon was.

I think the mythology will start to be explored next season, since Locke has his know it all license with the Others. Plus the producers have said that the 4 toed statue will be explained before 2008 (our time, hopefully) was over. And Ben was in all those hieroglyphics down by the frozen donkey wheel. Fingers crossed.

Kate's stupid face will continue to piss me off.

Desmond might be done. His story is basically finished, and he and Penny are back together. But then again, Ben promised to kill her, so they may clash at some point.

Momma Sun is kind of a bad ass.

That's all I can fire off for now. What did you guys think? Any particular revelations you'd like to share? Lemme hear it below.

Matt: Didn't Walt say to crazy-farm Hurley that Michael was still alive? I'm still stuck on how Claire turned into the cabin-hopping Kate-warning ghost being.

I don't think so, I thought something was said about WHEN his father was alive, not that he WAS alive. I can't remember because I was too busy marveling at the mystery of his afro.

But then again, Hurley was playing Chess with Mr. Ecko and hangs out with Charlie. Dead Christian hangs out with everyone. It's not really a show where the dead stay that way.

All I can say is that the fact that "Gouge Away" by Pixies is playing at the beginning of the final scene is proof that this show is the ultimate in badassedness. Yay! And such.

No, Desmond and Daniel are still around. Ben says everybody has to come back to the island, and that would include Des. And Daniel, if he were dead or gone, would have gotten some sort of acknowledgement of such.

My question is how the heck are they gonna get Sun to go back, especially if she has to bring the baby? Unless Jin ~is~ still alive, but I would've been willing to bet he wasn't.

Is Widmore the "bad guy", or not?

Did you see the alternate endings, with Sawyer or Desmond in the casket?

Interesting that John Locke became Jeremy Bentham. Both influential English philosophers who contributed a lot foundations of modern liberal social and economic thought.

Matt, is this you?

Not sure if they would acknowledge Daniel's death yet. It appears he was in transit during the explosion, so he probably missed that, but that might mean he also was in transit when the island disappeared, and therefore he was left out in the middle of open water when it moved (same for Jin, and perhaps Sawyer, depending on how fast he swam). Michael is probably dead. He's probably "allowed" by the island to die now that he's more or less paid his penance.

Sawyer made it back-- they showed him talking to Juliet. I feel like Jin is still alive, just so there's a twist when Sun tries to sabotage everything/everyone thinking he's dead...

This show just blows my mind. I'm trying to convince my husband to spend the summer evenings replaying every episode until we've seen them all twice just in time for next season to start. There are so many rabbit trails and things to remember.....

Are the Others all dead or in some un-dead state like Michael? They can be invisible when they want and be seen when they want and we already know the one guy can't "die" or at least seems to be ageless....

I can't wrap my brain around this thing.

Some random thoughts and questions:

Did Claire die in that explosion when the mercs attacked New Otherton? If not, when did she die? Is she dead?

Why does pill popping boozy beardy Jack like the angsty rock (Nirvana, Pixies) so much?

Is Richard Alpert gonna wear his Batmanuel outfit next year?

Whas Charlotte born on the island, and if so how?

How funny is the ghost buster/hustler Miles: "What DO I mean?

How does Locke end up dead off the island? Why would he ever want to leave?

I could go on, but I'll stop here before I get way out of control.

"Maybe Rose, though, with all that attitude over her peanuts."

HAHAHA!!

Anyway, I heard some people making a fuss over Locke's casket being short. I didn't think it was short, but others do. Thoughts?

Also, Richard REALLY needs to lay off the eyeliner. Seriously.

I wonder how many people ran for the lyrics to "Gouge Away" to search for clues? I know my pals and I did...
Des and Daniel don't HAVE to make it back because they aren't from the plane crash.
Lots of interesting time travel theories on this website:

Also, John's scar over his eye was gone, too. I knew something was strange when I saw him, but I couldn't place it until someone else pointed it out (yes, on lostpedia).

Oh, and one more thing, I think it'd be awesome (and helpful) if someone were to remix the show's flash backs, island days and flash forwards in chronological order, so you could follow through the events as they happened.

Posted by obuchanan (anonymous) on June 2, 2008 at 12:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Why is it only the crash survivors who have to return? Everyone who makes it to the island was "called" to it in some way or another, it seems.

Posted by matt (Matt Armstrong) on June 2, 2008 at 8:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I think you guys have hit on a major clue here. It's obvious that the bearded Jack scenes are actually flashbacks. Either that or he hasn't updated his car, clothes, or record collection since 1994. "Scentless Apprentice" in last year's finale, and now "Gouge Away"? What next? Jack's going to be searching for the island to Mother Love Bone?

The idea about arranging the entire show chronologically is nice, but Jesus! Can you imagine what an undertaking that would be? I was talking to a friend last night, and we realized that some of the character stories are all caught up now. Like Ben, earlier this season he had flashforwards to waking up in the desert, and now that's all current. Where is next season going to take place?!? In LA, the island in whatever universe it exists now, and anywhere Ben is around the world? Christ.

Also, I think I know what Sawyer said to Kate. He probably asked he to find his daughter. Anybody remember her?

Posted by pistachio (anonymous) on June 2, 2008 at 8:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Mother Love Bone. Hee hee.

So Matt, are you suggesting that the plane went down in the early 90's (perhaps around the time Temple of the Dog came out?) and the islanders have been suspended in Island Time since? Interesting.

Anyone notice if Cheech looked markedly older at Hurley's post-rescue birthday party 2 weeks ago?

Posted by matt (Matt Armstrong) on June 2, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Not really, just making a crack about his music tastes.

Posted by alm77 (anonymous) on June 2, 2008 at 2:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Enhanced video (again, lospedia) does sound as if Sawyer says "I have a daughter in Albuquerque. Find her." or something like that.
