Bad Seeds - Beautiful Fruits
Saturday, March 1, 2008
So my Friday photography class was a public mockery of my ability to connect with my students. Age, language and culture are all issues that are at play here. But, between pieces of fruit being thrown across the room, and my best student literally begging me to get the class under control because she wants to learn, a couple of students actually managed to take some interesting images . . . like the Coconut Picture. I have no idea which of my lovable hellions shot this. It was the only picture on the camera. Some student literally sat down, for their first studio image ever, snapped this one shot, and then rejoined the chaos.

I cannot help but notice the striking resemblance to the work of the photographer we studied at to start the class, Irving Penn.

My other class, where the students work diligently and all really want to say interesting things about the world, have also produced some beautiful images. Unfortunately, this room has no natural sunlight for us to shoot from, but the students rocked it out with cheap hardware store lamps and tin foil for reflectors. I am amazed by each and every student in this class.

I can't wait until next week when we start taking pictures about social issues!

The federal law on privacy rights for student records (FERPA) requires that ALL student records (and that includes their work product) be kept confidential, unless permission to release is given (or a court order issues).
Really good art there. However, as much as I enjoyed seeing this art, I'd hate to see you get in trouble. Without the children (and in the case of minors, their parents) permission, you may want to re-think posting copies of a student's work especially when associated with their first name!!

Just FYI - more information on the FERPA

Student work is protected by FERPA if it is personally identifiable. Obviously, student work is personally identifiable if it is labeled with the student's name. But even without a name, student work can be considered identifiable if it contains sufficient information about the student to enable someone to identify the author or artist. If student work is personally identifiable, the district should seek parental consent before posting the work.

Hang in there, Billy. There's your chaos without art, and there's your chaos with art.
