Fear of a Neutral Planet

Seriously?

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Yes, yes, I watched the game last night, too. I, also, got excited as hell and screamed joyful profanities and wished myself doing keg stands down on Mass. Looked like a jolly good time.

What I don't get is why some dicktards have to take a perfectly wonderful evening of high-fiving and "Wooooooo!"s and turn it into an assault charge. What part of, "I'm having a fucking awesome time drinking and revelling in vicarious victory" trips the "let's beat the crap out of some random dude" trigger? Myself, I tend to be a very angry and violent person, and this is the scenario I'm *least* likely to start shit in.

I logged into my MySpace page today to find this bulletin, posted by The Third Planet: (re-posting from the Replay folks...)

"ok busy crazy night at work .... so KU are #1 sweet ...not too bad of a night

UNTIL....... we are about to leave . some of the bartenders were figuring tip out for door guys and such .

one of our door guys (Seth ) went to bring his car around so he could give rides home to some of our staff (replay) when he got jumped . . pretty BAD as it is 8:30 am and i just left the hospital .where he will be sent to KU med where the neurologist are for observation . .. yes i said bad .... being how hospital bills are very expensive .. he will need some help paying for this .

so if you know seth please help out . we will be putting together some benifits for him. i will inform you on his recovery . and if you would like to donate .

i wish him well and a quick recovery .

if you could repost this it would be very much appreciated ...

thank you for your time ...karl"

Way to go, guys. The biggest damn party this town has seen in who knows how long, and you decide that's a good time to beat down on some tired-assed dude trying to get home from work? Classy, assholes, that's just real classy.

Oh my god. This is the first I heard about this. Seth is one of my favorite people from work-- completely sincere, genuinely nice, always willing to help out any one at any time. An exceedingly rare breed of person in this day and age... The kind of person who would probably forgive his attackers. Fortunately, I'm NOT that kind of guy-- and if I ever find out who these spineless fucks are, I'm going to skin them alive. Or worse, make them clean the Repaly bathrooms. That's some serious punishment.

That is truly horrible. I adore Seth. He is such a sweet, kind man, and the best hugger I know. I am just beside myself right now, with anger and sadness.

Misty, thanks for helping to get the word out. Let's hope that Lawrencians can, once again, demonstrate their awesome ability to band together, this time to help a truly good soul.

Poor, sweet Seth. I can't stop crying...

Exactly, way to keep it classy. And after Seth spent his night pulling kids off the roof. They were trying to sneak in by jumping the awnings.

ah shit, terrible news. thanks for spreading the word, though.

i guess i have to revise what i just wrote on my blog now:

"I also can't help but marvel at the crowd that flooded onto Mass Street, not because of the number of people, but because of the lack of destruction and violence. From what I've read, the crowd was around 40,000 people and there were only a handful of arrests and no major damage done to property or person. I don't think it's incorrect to speculate that there aren't many college towns where such a large crowd of boozed up sports fans could come together and not end up in a fog of tear gas and shattered store fronts. The fact that didn't happen reminds me why I've always loved Lawrence."

Makes my anger at the dickhead who dumped beer on my chest, soaking my camera, seem trvial.

I hope everything turns out okay and karma is tracking those assholes right now and for a long time to come. I'll definitely keep an eye out for any benefits/donation opportunities.

KU needs a class in How To Not Be a Jackass and Spoil It For Everyone....101.

Where does one send contributions to the Seth medical bill fund?

This really is such a shame and a sad mark on what otherwise was such a great night. All the nice stuff people are saying about Seth is true. Sweet guy. I hate people sometimes.

Posted by alm77 (anonymous) on April 8, 2008 at 8:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Okay, this is weird. I didn't realize how many of you know Seth. He lived with us for about a year. We've known him about 7 years (we actually all moved here together)... SO, I went to the hospital in KC to see him today, he's doing well considering. Broken nose, stitches in his lip and the biggest concern was a brain bleed, which hasn't gotten the doctors really worried, but they are keeping an eye on it. Second CT scan today was same as the first so that was good news. I talked to him mom about an hour ago and she said that they are glad the results came back as well as they did and that they are now awaiting the decision of the "trauma team" (I think that's what she called it) to see when he can come home. Seth is totally normal, I've had phone calls asking if he's had any brain damage and the answer is NO. I was there when the lady was asking him all the recollection questions (dates, numbers, etc.) and he did better than I think I could without a blow to the head. So, seems like he's going to eventually be back to normal.

LL- I'm not sure what's going on with the fund yet, I know some guys are trying to organize a benefit concert, I'll let you know as soon as I hear for sure what they are planning on doing.

PHIL!! I have a question!! Wasn't the "tower cam" pointed straight at the Replay last night (10th and Mass) has anyone thought of checking the tape? I think he was parked on the curb on 10th, but I'm not sure where exactly. Do you know anything about that?? THANKS!!

OH and also, this didn't seem to be crowd celebrating related. It happened at like 4:30 this morning. He was, as is his fashion, getting his car to take people home so they didn't have to walk in the rain. Go figure. I've already prayed every imprecatory prayer over those bastards I can think of. May karma (and Jesus) deal them as is fit.

Scary, I'll definitely be in touch.

Winning is as beautiful as the celebration by drunken fans is as ugly.

Seriously though, this from a writer who is trying to "get in" with scripting professional wrestling? Where random violence is the norm? And where your husband takes your child? Or is that just "entertainment"? I enjoy your blog Misty, but it's no less conflicted than anything else in the world.

I don't think it's fair to assume that the assailants were KU students. Though I don't know Seth, I feel terrible for him and can relate, as I have been jumped in Lawrence before (luckily no serious injuries). But there were 40,000 people on Mass by some estimates and KU only has 28,000 students or so. Even if every single one of them was on Mass, which I doubt, that leaves a lot of people who were not students. I wish Seth well and hope he has a speedy recovery, but let's not jump to conclusions here until there is a little more information to work with.

Posted by alm77 (anonymous) on April 9, 2008 at 1:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Carter, I'm 95% sure they were NOT students. I'll be VERY surprised to find out if that's the case. They claimed to be from out of town and in need of directions.

Posted by mitzibel (Misty Nuckolls) on April 9, 2008 at 1:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Who said they were KU students? I might have missed it in a comment, but I never presumed to identify them as anything other than assholes.

i was just referring to the post that said KU needs a class in how to not be a jackass and spoil it for anyone.. anyways, glad to hear that there is no brain damage and hopefully the footage will help catch the losers that did this.

YAY!!!! Also, Seth got a call from someone who saw it and filled in some more details. Those have been passed along to the authorities as well.

Seth just got out of the hospital!

Carter, I stand by my wish for KU to have a class in practicing non-assholery...with a satellite branch in Topeka and Johnson County.

Very glad to hear he's out of the hospital and that these people have a better chance of being found.

Whoever organized the benefit account, THANK YOU!
And thanks Misty for posting in this forum about it. This was the first place I heard the bad news, but I'm glad there's a community effort to help out.
Seth is a spark of light in a dark world, deserving of all the love. Definitely the Spook Lights are in for playing any benefit shows!

Cutny my dear, the difference between random violence and professional wrestling is that wrestlers are consenting adults in a chosen profession as paid entertainers. I am sure that Seth was not consenting to an unprovoked violent altercation with multiple attackers.

Hey Misty

This is Tim from Rex's Stadium Barber Shop. Make sure you or someone from replay get me some flyers about this benefit so we can let people know the details. I've had a few ask about it. You might also make sure Papa Keno's gets some info on it also. Thanks for the updates all. Hope you get home soon, Seth.

Apparently he was trying to help this sick bastards with directions right before they assaulted him.

I don't even know the guy beyond the fact that he's probably checked my ID at the Replay a few times, but this incident really upsets me nonetheless. I accept that people often don't appreciate or even notice when you are helpful, but to be attacked for it just disgusts me to no end.

Alm: on the benefit show -- I'd be interesting in helping out, either by playing, organizing, general grunt work, etc. Wherever I might be of use. I've "friended" the Benefit Seth myspace -- my display name is JBen and you can contact me there. Thanks for keeping everyone in the loop.

Also, do yourself a favor and skim some of those LJW comments. I just don't get it. It's like a whole other world over there.

Jill, yeah, I gave up on the LJW comments. But it looks like you've done an awesome job!! HA!!

There has been one benefit show already planned, but I'm a little out of the loop on that one, so I've been in touch with about 5 other bands (Spook Lights included) and I think we'll do another. It sure won't hurt.

I'll give the details on both as soon as I get some.

Oh, and Jill thanks for the donation! I will definitely let you know if we need your skills.

On a somewhat related subject, my friend Chuck almost got jumped going to his house after leaving the Zarco on 9th and Iowa a few days back. Seems like our old Last Call idiot patrons are having trouble finding a place to take their random violence and found a great place to do it during the NCAA victory celebration. I hope the guys responsible for what happened to Seth get what they deserve!

From Seth's myspace bulletin:

PART 1 of 2

Hey, I want to start by thanking everyone who has been praying for me and/or thinking of me. It means more then I can possibly say.

So again, thanks!
I am doing well.

Just wrangle in all the rumors about what happened to me;
On Monday night/ Tuesday morning at sometime between 4:00 and 4:30 AM, I went to get my car to give one of my bartenders a ride home. I drove around and pulled up into the first parking space on the north side of 10th st. outside of the Replay Lounge. I climbed out of my car to find a gold sadden pull up next to me. The passenger's side rear window rolled down to reveal 5 african american males looking between the ages of 20-25. The individual in that seat said "We're lost." and proceeded tell me that they were in town for the game (GO JAYHAWKS!!!!) and could not find the place they were staying. The street he was asking about I had never heard of, so I then started to just give him the lay out of the town explaining 6th, 9th, 23rd, Iowa, Mass, all that jazz. At this point the person in the back seat on the driver's side said he was going to switch seat complaining about something I don't remember what. and jumping out walking around the back of the car my direction while telling the other two people in the back seat to move over. That is all I remember.

But from others accounts;
I talked to the guy that had gotten out for about 10-15 sec. then he hit me once in the face. I fell back and my head hit my head on concrete planter a few feet away. One of the staff at the Replay saw this happen, ran out the door of the Replay and yelled scaring my attackers away.

This is as far as I have been able to gather the best account of what happened that night thus far.

Posted by editer (Phil Cauthon) on April 11, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

PART 2 of 2

Me, I got a broken nose, laceration on my lip that required 3 stitches and a gnarly bruise on my head. That would not have been so bad, except the bruise on my head was alittle worse then a normal bruise on your head. My brain was bleeding slightly and it showed up on a CT scan done at the hospital. This is where a normal $800 bill becomes .....I have no idea yet how much $ bill. The staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital were afraid that it may continue bleeding and they did not have the staff to properly treat it if it did. So I was transferred to KUMed in KC via ambulance (which was a pretty comfortable ride unlike I had heard in the past). There they wanted to observe me for about 24 (which turned into 30) hours and took 2 more CT scans in that time.

The blood spot on my brain was about the size of a pea. What the doctors were watching for was a few things; first to make sure it did not grow any larger and/or move at all, and second that my brain was working correctly. All the CT scans turned up the same, the blood pool did not move or grow, this was good. Also they did a several tests on me checking my short term and long term memory, also checking my balance and equilibrium. Which I passed all brilliantly. So they then let me free at about 1PM on Wed.

That brings us up to date pretty much. I am getting my stitches out and new glasses on Saturday, and back at work as of yesterday.

People have been very kind to set up http://myspace.com/benefitseth for me, I do not have insurance and truly appreciate any help anyone can give. There will be a few benefit shows at the Replay and Jackpot in the coming months. The first is already scheduled for the 23 of this month @ The Replay.

Again thank you to all!!!!

God Bless,
sethm_wiese

received via email:

I'm a nurse at LMH and in the past have had some pretty bad health problems that resulted in large hospital bills at several facilities in Lawrence and Topeka. LMH (and probably KUMed as well) is GREAT about writing off some of your bill and working out a payment plan for the remainder--interest free. They only do this for you, however, if you are proactive about it. You have to call them when you get your bill and be up front with them regarding the amount per month you think you can pay. Then you need to pay in a timely manner. If you run into financial problems and need to adjust your payments, call them right away to make the arrangements.

Hospitals (including LMH) write off millions of dollars of care per year, and they also understand that it is better for their bottom line to get a little of the bill every month than get nothing and have to pay the legal fees to deal with it. So in general they are pretty good about working with you on reasonable payment plans. Do this for every bill that you get. When budgetting how much you think you can pay each month, keep in mind that you will probably get separate bills from the hospitals as well as radiologists, consulting physicians, labs, etc. Just call each organization the minute you get the bill to make arrangements.

You might also ask to speak with the hospital social workers. Each hospital has different scopes for their social workers, but at LMH one of their main jobs is to get people hooked up with resources. They will help you find out if you qualify for any state or federal programs that can help pick up the tab for your hospitalization. If you would have been admitted to LMH, a social worker would have automatically visited you for this reason, since you don't have insurance. Since you were shipped out, and didn't have the opportunity to speak with them, request a consultation as an outpatient. I'm sure KUMed has similar resources for their uninsured patients.

I'm very sorry about what happened to you, and I'm glad your recovery has been fairly smooth. I know how it feels to have no resources and to have thousands of dollars of medical bills hanging over your head, so I wanted to share what I've learned, from both being in a similar situation and being an insider of sorts. All of this might not be news to you, but in the event that you haven't had to deal with paying off large medical bills, I hope the information is helpful.
