Fear of a Neutral Planet

Dear Headcount . . .

Monday, May 5, 2008

. . . I wanted to send a message explaining why I’ve denied your Friend Request here on MySpace. While I applaud your devotion and exuberance, I’m afraid that I simply don’t share your belief that registering voters at bars and music venues will save America from its corrupt political machine. In fact, your efforts to encourage douchebag idiots with no grasp of history or our Constitution to believe that they have any place at all in deciding which persons are qualified to lead this country may well, in fact, be viewed by future generations to be as enormous a mistake as the current war in Iraq. However, if you decide to start recruiting volunteers to sit down with patrons at said bars and music venues to administer a simple civics exam *before* handing them a voter registration form and tickets for two free well drinks, please get in touch with me, because that’s much more up my alley.

Thank you.

311 has grassroots, y'all. Grassroots advocacy, yo.

Yes, I actually did have a couple of their CDs back in the day. It was the early 90s -- everyone was doing it.

It's great when people organize and work together on something. But the work in question must have some chance of having the desired results for me to get too interested. There is just not that much in me that enjoys a group hug, rant, roar, or petition - if it won't result in something I want.

I don't know where the idea arose that just signing your name to a petition etc. has some really big impact upon "the powers that be" but I am here to tell you that it usually is a giant waste of time and effort. The one exception is if said petition is one recognized by law. And there aren't that many of those. Especially in Kansas.

If you want to work for a change, I may not join, but I'll cheer you on for doing something (rather then just sitting around complaining). But if you simply want to holler or pester other people just so you can get attention, do not be surprised if the rest of the world treats you like they treat a 3 year old seeking the same thing.
