Ten Million Pounds of Sludge

McCain's '92 C-Bomb

Thursday, June 19, 2008

I don't think The Public Service Administration is what you would call a 527 group (unless they're tax exempt), but here's a pretty tasty little YouTube McCain slam over a certain c-word he apparently called his wife in front of a group of reporters in 1992. Cindy commented that he was going a bit bald, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt."

Trollop? Cunt? Oh, yikes, man. There's that infamous temper. Who uses the word trollop? That was 16 years ago, though, and while eeee... yeah, that's a pretty nasty thing for a then-54-year-old guy to call his wife - but is this kind of thing smeary? It's a spoof, kinda. Not really. They're a political comedy group making fun of something that happened.

I guess the fact that it's true makes it a different than the Michelle O "whitey" thing or the Larry Sinclair thing (guy who claimed to have sex and do drugs with Obama in 1999) because it's, well, true, this isn't exactly a sign of progressive politics. On the other hand though, it's kinda foolish to think that this would ever be a "clean" campaign, despite what the candidates claim to want.

Obama, should he get word of this, should probably walk his talk and decry it as "old politics" (I ain't saying the YouTube clip isn't funny, btw). Maybe put it on his Fight the Smears site. Or maybe not because it actually happened. The Huffington Post should stay away from Cindy's past history of addiction for sure because it is their candidate's wish to stay away from family members, even though that's true - I think her admitted story of addiction, stealing to feed addiction, etc. more or less of limits anymore because she's a human being that has had problems and she dealt with it by having been through treatment.

So is this different considering it is an actual quote from the candidate himself, even if it's 16 years old? Surely that word might alienate whatever few loco Clinton supporters went over to McCain, right? If not their claims of sexism turning them away from the Dems might become even more delusional. I guess I haven't totally made up my mind about it. He did call his wife a trollop and a cunt in public for no real good reason, after all. 16 years ago. When I was ten years old.

Am I being too kind? My buddy Brian here is saying that if a candidate's going to tow a party line of experience, this is a good indication of some bad public behavior we should be concerned about. Good point, I think.

If nothing else it's some hefty gray area, and a sign that the dirty's just starting.

Saw that video yesterday. Best part?

WOMAN: John McCain called his wife the worst name in the world.

BLACK GUY: But she's not even black!
