M.I.A.

8 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 at Liberty Hall ($16)

Maya Arulpragasm spent much of her young life between London, Sri Lanka, and India. M.I.A., the moniker she later adopted (standing for both "Mission in Action" and "Missing in Acton," a part of London) came from a book of paintings she created while a student in London. Her art was heavily influenced by her father, a member of the rebel Tamil Tigers, who—because of his political affiliations—she has rarely seen. This artwork led her to meet the recording artist Peaches, who strongly encouraged her foray into hip hop and music, introducing her to the Roland MC-505 sequencer. She began creating demos, including what would become her breakout single, "Galang." Her unconventional feel for music—perhaps a result of her international upbringing and her coming-of-age in the London grime scene, as well as top-shelf writing ability and musical flow—made her an immediate critical darling and her bombast has won her a worldwide audience. more show info
