I would really like to hear the band "Psilenus" perform at the Deadwood Derby. They have a really great sound and original compositions by Jay Robken that sound different to other bands. Theirs is a really polished act. I think lots of other people would enjoy their music, too. I suggest them as a wild card. Suzanne

Jolly Roger is an excellent band and deserves the wild card slot. They have a great guitar sound and make good use of all their member's significant skill. Drums, bass, guitar and vocals all work together to create a great sound.

It was tough to pick just one band. Good arguments can be made for all the bands listed above, particularly Noise FM—off all the runners up, they likely had the hardest time getting people out to their show because of the KU championship the night before.

We ultimately settled on Guse because they brought out the most people of the runner-up bands and because we felt like their style would best add to the variety of the finals.

We sincerely appreciate the participation of all the bands and all the supporters who came out to the preliminary rounds. We hope you'll come to the finals even if your band didn't make it this year.

So having all your friends show up to a gig on a Tuesday night is what Lawrence.com is wanting? I guess having enough people at the show to tape the turnpike makes sense.

It's great to see Guse will be playing the finals. The Noise FM are great too, I figured it would be close between the two of them.

Lawrence.com did a great job this year getting a very diverse group of bands in the Derby. May 3rd will be an awesome show to catch!

that's actually not true - just read the ballots (or even the computations above)

in fact, in round 3 alone, guse was 3rd place in crowd votes

dactyls had 37, which turned into 100
jolly roger had 34, which turned into 92
guse had 32, which turned into 86
deep thinkers had 10, which turned into 27

one can only assume that "brought out the most people" is euphemistic for "had the most posts on the internet"
let's not conflate the two, please

The runner-up bands are the ones that placed 2nd in their round. These would be Round 1: Noise FM (14 votes), Round 2: The Graves End (18 votes), Round 3: Guse (32 votes). Of those three RUNNER-UP bands Guse did indeed receive the most votes (not voting percentage, but actual votes). Therefore, Phil's statement IS true.

Let's not be sore losers here people. Your band lost. Now get on with your life.

I guess I just expected more from Lawrence.com. Club Wars and all the other battles are so bad sometimes they can't get their own band members to show up.

Funny how the top voted bands had such a high vote count but yet their fans didn't show up? Lawrence.com needs a better system for this and not the "online voting" that they couldn't control to be fair.

Agreed that the online voting has its shortcomings. That's why this year only half of the bands selected for the first 3 rounds were determined by online voting (vs the previous years in which all bands were determined that way).

In selecting bands and then judging each round, we're doing what we can to strike a balance between more or less democratic factors (online voting, crowd size) and some relatively subjective factors (musicianship, stage presence, etc). This is just the third Derby, but I think the general consensus is that we're getting pretty close to a fair process that also makes for a solid showcase.

We've done so largely through feedback on the previous two Derbys — so please, send us your suggestions or post them here.

Thanks to all the bands and to everyone who came out and made the 3rd annual Deadwood Derby a big success! And we'd like to especially thank all the Derby sponsors whose donations make this local music showcase even possible—PLEASE support them every chance you get.

The Derby is a constantly evolving event meant to provide increased exposure and opportunity for local bands of all kinds.

Of course, when one band's "victory" necessarily means other bands do not enjoy the same rewards, there are bound to be some hard feelings. We sincerely hope those hard feelings on the part of bands and/or fans are minimal—and we think they are...after all, all 12 bands that participated this year—not to mention all those involved in the online voting—got the chance to perform in front of a diverse audience that might not have come out to see them otherwise. And the four finalists had the pleasure of playing Liberty Hall in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd. And obviously the winner and the runner up bands will enjoy their free studio time, too.

Inevitably some will still doubt the legitimacy or fairness of the process though. We would like to offer this by way of explanation, and encourage ALL to send us your feedback or post it below to help improve next year's Derby.

For the last two years, we have received criticism that the "crowd response score" should not be in the hands of the judges. So this year we put an even greater portion of the score in the hands of the crowd, through an actual vote. The crowd portion of the vote ultimately choose the winner in every round of this year's competition. Is that fair? Probably depends on who you ask. Regardless it was applied consistently to all bands.

We all have different preferences in what we like to listen to. All the members of all the bands in the Derby are accomplished musicians who, for the most part, have spent years honing their craft. They are all talented.

Ultimately, SOMETHING has to decide a zero sum contest where some win prizes and such and some don't. Does that make it a popularity contest? Probably... the trick is to make it as fair and balanced (to borrow a tainted phrase) of a contest as possible.

So here's where you come in—PLEASE tell us, from your point of view, what would make next year's Derby better than this year?

so last year there were accusations of cronyism
this year mob rule
while the cronyism claim was essentially speculative, the mob rule one is indisputable
the band who received the highest score from every one of the five judges didn't win the competition
that just doesn't look good
what can you do besides tweak it a little more next year

Why even have the judges at all? If their contribution is essentially irrelevant, then just get rid of them and let it be what it truly is...a contest which determines who can make the most people shake their asses to "danceable music with solid production".
