Bonner Springs is a growing community that offers many options for Kansas travelers. In addition to its own small-town charms, Bonner Springs is only a few miles from some of the state’s largest attractions, such as the Legends at Village West and the Kansas City metro area.

What to do there

Bonner Springs is home to the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, which runs Labor Day weekend through October. This attraction brings to life a 16th-century village that includes musical and theater entertainment, jousting matches, costumed characters and a feast of turkey legs. For music lovers, Bonner Springs offers several music concerts from May to October at Capitol Federal at Sandstone Amphitheater, 633 N. 130th St. For this season’s schedule, visit any online ticket dealer.

Must see

For travelers looking for a unique experience, a visit to the Moon Marble Co., 600 East Front St., is a must. Visitors have the opportunity to see marble making, glass making and the history of the marble at this quirky stop. Bonner Springs is also home to the Kansas City area’s only dedicated improv theater. The Roving Imp, 115 Oak St., offers performances Fridays and Saturdays that are sure to bring out big laughs.

For the kids

The National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, 630 N. 126th St., displays exhibits of the past as well as the future in agriculture pursuits. Children can play in old schoolhouses and barns and take train rides through Farm Town USA.

Pocketbook friendly

Wyandotte County Park, just off Kansas Highway 7 at 126th Street and State Avenue, offers several free family activities. Your day can start with a picnic on the park grounds, which is filled with lush grass and trees for a relaxing feeling. The park also houses the Wyandotte County Historical Museum and a large lake for fishing.

The annual Marble Days Festival, hosted by the Moon Marble Co., is a day dedicated to old-fashioned family fun. This year’s festival will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 1. The next festival, Tiblow Days, is a weekend event that includes a variety of activities that range from a carnival, craft booths and live musical performances. This year’s event will be Aug. 27-28.

Bonner Springs was originally known as Tiblow in honor of one of the founders, Henry Tiblow, a full-blooded Delaware Indian.

How to get there

Bonner Springs sits right off Interstate 70 at exit 224 for Kansas Highway 7.

Also near

Farther north from Bonner Springs on Kansas Highway 7 is the Legends at Village West shopping center. This retail district not only includes shopping and restaurants, but also is home to Nebraska Furniture Mart, Cabela’s, the Kansas Speedway, the soon-to-be-built Hollywood Casino and the Wizards professional soccer stadium. Parkville, Mo., is also about a 30-minute drive from Bonner Springs.
