A Day Away

Excelsior Springs

Why go there

The rejuvenative powers of spring water were enough to bring everybody from Al Capone to Harry Truman to Excelsior Springs during its heyday. Now, a historic hotel that offers luxuries both old and new is the main attraction in this town of about 12,000 people about 25 miles outside of Kansas City.

What to do there

The Elms Resort & Spa, 401 Regent St., is a 153-room, full-service hotel and spa that was built in 1912. Indoors, guests can treat themselves to aromatherapy massage, a Vichy rainfall shower, or take a few turns in the hotel’s European lap pool. The property includes 16 acres for bocce ball, horseshoes, sand volleyball and plenty of private space for hiking or strolling.

Must see

The community’s spring water still takes center stage at the Hall of Waters & Cultural Museum, 201 E. Broadway. Built for $1 million in 1935, the Art Deco building served up spring water at its “water bar” for much of the 20th century. Now guests can get Excelsior Springs bottled water at the facility, and also view the opulence the water industry once provided for the town.

Save the date

The city’s mineral water heritage gets its own weekend each summer. Waterfest will take place June 25-27, and will feature arts, crafts, live entertainment, a parade, fireworks and water games for the kids.
