A Day Away

Lincoln

Why go there

Lincoln, Nebraska’s state capital, has a vibrant downtown, robust arts scene and a soft spot for football fans. With a population of about 252,000, Lincoln is home to the University of Nebraska.

What to do there

Known for its nightlife along O Street, Lincoln is also home to museums, art galleries and parks. For many across the state, Memorial Stadium is a popular destination on fall weekends for Cornhusker football games.

Must see

The Nebraska State Capitol is a popular tourist spot. Constructed between 1922 and 1932, the skyscraper building with a gold dome is one of four capitols in the country built in the spire fashion. The Lincoln Children’s Museum, just a few blocks from the University of Nebraska, has three floors of interactive fun. Among the highlights are a three-story apple tree, a full-size Cessna airplane and a water exhibit. Another treat for kids is the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. With its hands-on learning exhibits, it is only one of five zoos in the country dedicated to educating youths.

Save this date

On June 18 and 19, the streets of downtown Lincoln will turn into an international party with the Celebrate Lincoln festival. For two days, the event will have food, drinks, games, music and merchandise from around the world.
