Country music. Some think they love it. Many damn sure hate it. One of life's beautiful little ironies is that far too often those who love country music in fact love something else -- Reba, Garth, Billy Ray and the like. Those who hate country would likely adore it, had they only heard the likes of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, originators of the Bakersfield sound back in the 50s. Kansas City claims one of the best Bakersfield-style songwriters of our time in Rex Hobart. They're the same old songs about heartbreak and being lonesome, but Rex keeps it interesting by weaving his reverent yarns with pith. His Misery Boys -- most with punk and rock backgrounds -- bring those nuances to an otherwise faithful sound. Sometime ago now Rex moved to Buffalo, NY. So, mayhaps it goes without sayin', this appearance with the Misery Boys (still happily residing in these parts) is a rare one.
