Ever been part of a flash mob? Neither have we, but they're all the rage in some parts of the country. Hordes of folks spanning from bizarro thrill-seekeers to the very, very bored congregate then flood an unsuspecting public place with the sole purpose of bewildering those who were previously occupying the space. This particular flash mob is a promotion stunt to hype the Red Balloon To-Do (Sept. 27). Red balloon- toting participants will attend the First Fridays gallery openings in the "Crossroads" gallery district in KC. They will be carpooling from Lawrence in case you don't have a ride. Once we get there, will be distributing red balloons and fliers for everyone to carry around and pass out to unsuspecting KC art fans. If you are capable of providing transportation for others, or you plan on simply joining us for the mobbage please email the collective with your name and phone number :: info@lawrenceartcollective.comOr meet at the Grimshaw at 4:30 and carpool.Dear Sir or Madam:The art scene in Lawrence was once restricted to coffee shop walls and University buildings. Recently, student run galleries and independent exhibitions of ambitious local artists have stimulated an interest in Lawrence's art scene. However, these few outlets are still relatively unknown within the community, despite strong support and continued interest. In response, the Lawrence Art Collective, in conjunction with two student-run galleries, presents yet another independent exhibition of local artists which will stress the community of artists and art lovers in Lawrence by coordinating multiple galleries and dozens of artists. "The Red Balloon To-Do" will take place on the evening of September 27th, simultaneously at the Olive Gallery (15 East 8th Street), the Grimshaw Gallery (731 New Hampshire), and three other independent venues to be announced the evening of the event. The tickets (which will take the form of red helium balloons on string) will be available for a suggested donation of one dollar. A balloon will gain admittance into any of the participating events. Each venue will offer creative works in a slightly different medium, ranging from painting, photography, and printmaking to performance and multimedia installations. This will be the third time the Lawrence Art Collective has sponsored a one-night showing of recent, original artwork. This event will celebrate the verve and diversity of the Lawrence art scene by combining the social atmosphere of Kansas City's First Fridays with the interconnectedness of Lawrence's independent cultural community."The Red Balloon To-Do", scheduled for the evening of Saturday, September 27th, is an integration and coordination of more venues, more artists, and most importantly, more spectators than ever before. By encouraging friends, lovers, and creators of art to intermingle among openings across town, we hope to strengthen, stimulate, and network our communities of music, art, and film.Sincerely, Domonic Sova, Peter Berard & The Lawrence Art Collective
