You might think us biased because The 'badass' Belles are from Lawrence, so here's what Rollingstone -- a reputable national music publication -- has to say:"I'm pretty sure you'd kill me/If you had the chance." Such is the wry pathos, both lyrical and musical, of lo-fi indie duo Christopher Tolle and Jake Cardwell -- a.k.a. the Belles -- on their debut album. Hyper-clever yet unpretentious, and bursting with the power of suggestion ("omerta" is Italian for "code of silence"), their art is easy listening, but in a mentally nourishing way. Check out the pacifically heroic "(Who Will Be) Here to Hear?" or the tepid tenacity of the quasi-poppy "Never Said Anything." And you have to admire any act that writes an obvious Beatles copycat song ("You Can't Have It All") and doesn't give a rat's handbag what anyone thinks. The Belles may be light, but they're far from lightweight.Patrick Park is signed with Hollywood Records and, after this show, is hooking up with the My Morning Jacket tour.
