Hot, Cold ... an art show

Seeking to outdo the bizarro quotient of "The Red Balloon To Do" (in which hundreds of art seekers walked from gallery-to-gallery with helium-filled red balloons attached to their wrists), the Lawrence Art Collective presents "Hot, Cold," a one-night only house exhibition complete with temperature-monitored rooms. Besides extreme climates (the organizers recommend wearing layers), audience members can expect to find a diverse collection of sculpture, painting and new-media works, all from local artists striving to make a name for themselves (and maybe score some wine-in-a-box in the process). From the Lawrence Art Collective: Once again, the Lawrence Art Collective is pleased to announce a one-night showing of recent artwork by local artists in local venues. "Hot, Cold," our first ever holiday theme show, celebrates the diversity of Lawrence's art scene by exploring the limits of creativity, emotion, and physical sensations - all within the context of sculpture, painting, and new-media art making. On St. Valentines Day of 2004, the Lawrence Art Collective presents a group show consisting of work themed "hot" or "cold". Each participating artist is encouraged to express this polarity however they feel appropriate.During the exhibition a physical barrier will bisect the venue, separating these extremes. There will be "hot" and "cold" art work and decor in each room. Most noticeably, the air temperature will correspond to the given theme. The Lawrence Art Collective aspires to confront our audience with a dynamic experience which is part mental, part physical, and very social. The direct experience of this happening will mark a significant expression of our community's artistic efforts. Taken as a whole rather than an as individual artists, the Lawrence Art Collective strives to create an art show which is a creative event within itself. This will be the fourth independent and regional exhibition of artwork to be produced by the Lawrence Art Collective. This group of young students, artists, musicians, and designers has been dedicated to increasing the mobility and approachability of the Lawrence art scene since 2001. Past events sponsored by the Lawrence Art Collective (including Brave and Small and The Red Balloon To-Do) have exhibited dozens of artists in varying ages and experience as well as drawn hundreds of art - loving spectators out for vivid celebrations of art and community. "Hot, Cold" will observe the diversity of Lawrence's art scene by combining new artists with old and old traditions with new."Hot, Cold", to be held February 14th at 8 pm, will take place at 1305 Tennessee. Artists interested in submitting work for either show are advised to visit the Lawrence Art Collective website, lawrenceartcollective.com, for applications and contact information. Visitors to "Hot, Cold" are encouraged to dress for the extremes (we recommend layers).
