Description: Lawrence, Kansas: Lawrence-based playwright Dan Born has written a relevant and entertaining two-act drama of power politics. "V Henry K" explores the fallout that arises when a small-town District Attorney (Penny Rose) indicts a legendary ex-statesman (Henry K) for orchestrating the murder of a man, who was her father, thirty years ago.
The fictional town of Rolliston, Iowa is the backdrop for a legal chess match that follows.

A local media personality, Tom Brixton, assists Penny in her
quest and falls in love with her. Tom's expansive charm serves him well
in his romantic entanglement with Penny, and provide the play with an
irreverent running commentary. Ng, a Cambodian-American lawyer whom
Penny hired to pursue Henry K, is intelligent and driven, yet has a
stutter and is haunted by dreams of his past.

Dan Born has written the character of "Henry K" as a
superficially charming, powerful, and dictatorial man. Henry K
initially tries to warn Penny from prosecuting him through veiled
threats that he is aware of her relation with the victim: Manuel Ruiz, a
Chilean-born journalist working on a story that would have connected
Henry K to the 1973 coup in Chile that overthrew Salvador Allende.
Penny hopes through Act One to keep her father's identity secret, but as
the attacks on her from the media and others grow, she is faced with a
decision: to continue with the prosecution of Henry K, or to give up
this lifelong mission for justice. Two shadowy intelligence men impede
Penny with various dirty tricks. Penny tries to rise above it all, but
by the end of the play, she needs Tom and Ng to help her carry on the
fight.

Founded in Lawrence, Kansas in 1998, E.M.U. Theater Company
provides a venue for local, independent writers and actors to work
collaboratively on original as well as well-established plays. "V Henry
K" will be E.M.U.'s twentieth full-length show.
