From the gallery: Although over 2 million Americans are incarcerated by the Prison Industrial Complex, there is neither enough display of prisoner art nor a clear understanding of prison issues. Our goal in showing prisoner art is to highlight the humanity often overlooked in portrayals by mainstream media, and to allow inmates a forum for expressing the conditions and experiences of prison life. For many prisoners, art is a means of maintaining positive mental health. Hopefully, the work on display will spark in the viewer the desire to learn more about the oppressive nature of prisons. You can view art presented through different mediums including standard paper, cloth napkins, cardboard, and popsicle sticks.
