Description: Born in 1995 in Manhattan, Kan., and since raised in Austin, BPM writes country songs that rock blues-style, thrash metal-esque, and get down hillbilly-like. The hard-touring band holds it down for the blue collar crowds, keeping it as raucous as is real.
Official bio from the band: Every now and then a band comes along that changes things. A band that combines a lot of influences to create a sound that is totally original and yet familiar. A band that is so honest in its approach that it stuns you. Back Porch Mary is that band. The roots of this band run deep. As far back as you can trace American Music you can trace the evolution that leads us to Back Porch Mary. Their show features the energy of Rock, the sensible songwriting of Country, and the vocal harmonies of Bluegrass. The band blurs lines between genres and they just don’t care. While giving a nod to the past, Back Porch Mary steps out on its own with a ferocity that hasn’t been seen in music in years.
The four members of Back Porch Mary are all from small town working class families. They are from places where hard work and hard living go hand in hand. Places that have little time for fashion and trends. Places where you say exactly what you mean and you do exactly what you say. Back Porch Mary is a blue-collar people’s band in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, Social Distortion, and Steve Earle and the Dukes.
At a Back Porch Mary show you will see any combination of cowboys, bikers, metal-heads, punks, farmers, and factory workers all mingling in unison and finding something in the band that they can latch onto and call their own. Armed with a full on Rock Show and an intimate acoustic set, Back Porch Mary has no trouble finding musical kinship with any listener. This fact is also evident with their extensive street team that the band has in place with street team leaders all over the country.
The band recorded their self-titled album that was released in the fall of 2002. The album was produced by Stuart Sullivan who has worked with such artists as Sublime, Willie Nelson, The Supersuckers, and Junior Brown just to name a few. The album was recorded in the summer of 2002 at Wire Recording Studios in Austin, Texas. The band is also featured in a full-length movie entitled “Screen Door Jesus”. They contributed four songs to the movie and it will be released in fall of 2003. The band consists of Mike on guitars and vocals, Shane “Slim” Laurence on guitar and background vocals, Joe Miller on electric and upright bass, and Taxi on drums. Together they have toured the United States and Europe.
