Official bio: b. Salem, Massachusetts, USA. Singer/songwriter Lord began her career by toiling as a busker in the public parks and subways of London, Boston and San Francisco, befriending Shawn Colvin in the process. Having attended the Berklee College Of Music for one year, she then studied sound engineering in England. Following the release of 1992's cassette-only Real, Lord recorded a single for Kill Rock Stars Records and became involved in a war of words with Kurt Cobain's widow, Courtney Love of Hole. Love used the press to slam Lord for cashing in her musical career on the back of an alleged "affair" with Kurt Cobain. The slanging match continued in both the US and UK press for some time thereafter.Undeterred, Lord's 1995 vinyl debut included contributions from Juliana Hatfield and members of Helium on "The Lights Are Changing", one of two tracks written by Nick Saloman aka Bevis Frond. Many wondered if the lyrics to "That Kind Of Girl": "All of her ex's, they could form a band", were a direct rebuff to Love. However, the words were actually written by Matt Keating. Of more interest was her own composition, "His Indie World", in which she berated her boyfriend for spending too many hours listening to deliberately obscure indie bands (many of which are mentioned by name) instead of paying her attention. The final pay-off line came when she pledged her personal allegiance to "Joni, Nick, Neil and Bob", an obvious if slightly optimistic summation of her own style.Following the release of the Martian Saints! EP, Lord signed to the Work Group, a subsidiary of Sony Records, for the release of her full-length debut. Got No Shadow illustrated her penchant for Saloman's material, including three co-written tracks, and also included a cover version of Freedy Johnston's "The Lucky One" alongside some disappointing originals. Lord remains an artist best experienced in a live setting, whether at "formal" concerts or busking on the street. She signed a new recording contract with Rubric Records in 2001.
