measureXmeasure / Hookslide / Genuine Imitation

Abe & Jake's Landing

What do you think of when you hear the phrase "a cappella"? Doo-wop groups singing oldies on a street corner? Barbershop quartets wearing striped jackets and straw hats? High school choirs performing madrigals? Classical ensembles intoning English church music in cathedrals? If so, you're not alone, and you're not entirely wrong. But you're not current either. In their continued push to bring "contemporary a cappella" to the forefront of the local music scene, Kansas City-based measureXmeasure (measure by measure) is headlining a night of all-vocal bands in one of the Midwest's premier music venues. To see and hear for yourself what the New York Times called "a vocal kaleidoscope of sounds", head to Abe & Jake's Landing, 8 East 6th Street, Lawrence, KS on May 8th. This is an early, all-ages show - doors open at 6:30 pm, concert starts at 7:00. Tickets are $5.00 at the door.measureXmeasure, which has spent the early part of 2004 touring the southern U.S., will be joined by San Francisco-based Hookslide, a 4-piece vocal band who is closing out their Midwest tour in Lawrence. It is the second time in the last year that the two groups have appeared together - the first taking place last August at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, CA. The concert is also a homecoming for Hookslide band member Paul Anderson - a KU alum and former member of measureXmeasure. Opening the show will be the new up-and-coming a cappella group from KU, Genuine Imitation. Additional
