Native American Theatre

Lawrence Arts Center

Acclaimed Oneida playwright, Bruce King, has written a new comedy for Thunderbird Theatre. His edgy style confronts contemporary issues that assault Native American communities from both external and internal sources. Far from a lecturer on cultural values, King personalizes his characters to reflect a contemporary story. In "Calling from the Smoke" the Henhawk family must come to terms with the illusions of the dreams that separate them from their family, community, and history. Nano Bush, a traditional trickster figure from the Northeast, calls the family together to present his idea for the next Hollywood blockbuster. Drawn by the allure of "easy money" as a means to happiness, Nano Bush pitches his inspired drama. However, as with many of Nano Bush plans, things don't always turn out as expected.King, a Santa Fe-based artist and playwright, has been in residence at Haskell Indian Nations University, developing his newest script. After viewing audition tapes of actors, King selected the cast then wrote the script according to the actors he selected. The play has been in workshop and the results will be presented at the Lawrence Arts Center on April 12 & 13. This is the second colloboration between Thunderbird Theatre and the Arts Center in their effort to bring Native American Theatre into the Lawrence community.
