Description: Hillbilly hardcore, post-punk progressive bluegrass, Appalachian Black Sabbath — whatever you call what Split Lip plays, fact is there should be nary a Kansan that doesn't take pride in this quintessential Kansas freak show. The recently streamlined threesome plays traditional bluegrass instruments (excepting a one-string upright bass fashioned from a gas tank) with fury to whip the whole crowd into a sweaty frenzy, pummeling the poor PAs systems that dare to channel their wrath.
Opener Truckstop Honeymoon (aka Mike West and Katie Euliss) recently moved to Lawrence after being flooded out of their New Orleans home. Mobile entertainers of the old-time ilk, the duo brandishes banjo, guitar and wash-tub bass to tell stories of adultery, pot seeds, big government and whatever else makes for a whoopin' good time. The band's attention-grabbing performances have made them a perennial favorite in the campground stages of the Walnut Valley Festival.

Opening for the opener is the pride of Northeastern Kansas, The Ants. The Ants have become one of Richard Gintowt's favorite bands. The reasons? The Ants unique perspective on midwestern bible belt strip mall culture, their lack of seriousness, their lulling arrangements, their lovely four part harmonies, their work ethic and mostly because of their flamboyant alcoholism.

alcoholism is cool, and necessary at this show.
