Topeka's annual "alternative jazz" festival is named after tenor saxophone legend Coleman Hawkins (1904-1969), who began his long career while still a teen attending Topeka High School. The event is FREE and entirely staffed by volunteers but still manages to boast some of the best talent in the area, including founder Dan Kozak (aka "that guy playing saxophone on the corner of 7th and Mass.") and a number of faculty from KU, Washburn and K-State.
