KU Opera, a division of the Department of Music and Dance in KU's Schoolof Fine Arts, presents "Albert Herring," a comic chamber opera byBenjamin Britten. The performances will be November 10, 12, 16, 19, and20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert Baustian Theatre in room 102 Murphy Hall."Albert Herring," written in 1947 by Benjamin Britten, follows the lifeof a shy young man who discovers his independence only after going on adrunken spree and then returning to his hometown after being presumeddead. Britten wrote this opera for the company that eventually becamethe English Opera Group. He composed many operas in addition to "AlbertHerring," including "The Turn of the Screw," "Billy Budd,""The Rape of Lucretia" and "Death in Venice." He was also a film andsymphony composer. Britten was awarded numerous prizes and honors,including the Robert O. Anderson Aspen Award in the Humanities and theGold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society in 1964.The KU Opera Department is the operatic producing organization of theVoice Department in the Department of Music and Dance.
