Truckstop Honeymoon / The Dewayn Brothers

There's something irresistable about a husband and wife string band that - at least by appearances - has been to hell and back for their art. Mike West and Katie Euliss (aka Truckstop Honeymoon) are mobile entertainers of the old-time ilk, brandishing banjo, guitar and wash-tub bass to tell stories of adultery, oil refineries, big government and whatever else makes for a whoopin' good time. The band's attention-grabbing performances have made them a perennial favorite on Stage Five of the Walnut Valley Festival (the only stage fit for their off-Nashville antics).

Don't miss this show. Mike West is one of the best songwriters out there today, and Miss Katie ain't no slouch neither. They played at Davey's in KC on Wednesday night and the roof was raised so high you could see the stars. Their songs go from ironic, to absurd, to angry, to heartbreakingly sentimental. Mike looks like Jesus, sings and talks like a Levy-Billy, plays any damn stringed instrument he picks up, and takes shit from nobody. But he don't play dixie. These two are professional entertainers from the old school, performing 200 nights a year worldwide. Also, Mike and Katie are from New Orleans 9th Ward. Their home and studio were destroyed when the levy broke and their current home base is Kirk Rundstrum's basement (a scary thought). So here's a chance to skip the middle men and support our Gulf Coast brothers and sisters by buying a CD, and at the same time you'll be getting some great stuff to put in your ears.
