Spoon 7:00-8:15
Since becoming 'Spoon' in 1994, just about everything but the Austin band's name has changed. After each of their five albums, guitarist/singer Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno have changed labels, changed up the rest of the band, and drastically changed their sound. However enigmatic, it is Daniel's creative vision and the constant interplay between him and Eno that ultimately identifies them as Spoon. The band's latest "Gimmie Fiction" navigates a brooding, piano-driven terrain that's as stark and strange as ever. In a good way, of course.
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings 5:15-6:30
When you hail from the hometown of James Brown, you better not funk around. Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings know funkloads more than most modern bands about lighting a keg of "soul dynamite" every time they hit the stage. The band has been cutting sought-after deep slabs of classic funk for years now on the Daptone Label, which harkens back to classic JB proteges like Marva Whitney and Lynn Collins. And when you have a band that shares members with Antibalas Beat Orchestra and dons names like "Funkyfoot," "Binky" and "Bugaloo" — it's hard to funk with that.
Ghosty 4:30-5:00
After some five years as one of Lawrence's favorite hometown bands, Ghosty is movin’ on up. A deal with Future Farmer Records for its stellar debut full-length "Grow Up or Sleep In" could well result in some national love like the band found in these parts. Now a five-piece, Ghosty utilizes two guitars, keyboards and harmonies to flesh out Andrew Connor's Elliott Smith- and Big Star-esque pop songs.
Kelpie 3:45-4:15
Drawing on influences ranging from the Beatles to Hum to Elvis Costello, Lawrence's Kelpie has been described as lounge-rock, a mathy singer/ songwriter project, progressive pop, "fancylad meandermusik" and everything in between. The very unique foursome takes plenty of chances with ambitious arrangements, all sewn together by tip-top melodiousness and a playful spirit. The band most recently released its debut full-length "Hey Friends, It's Kelpie!" with Matt Talbot (formerly of Hum) and embarked on a European Tour with Koufax designed to whet the appetites of anyone with an open ear and a taste for outside-the-lines pop rock. The band took a brief hiatus to introduce a new guitarist, who purportedly plays all the parts of their recently departed keyboardist.
The Belles 3:00-3:30
Born as a duo consisting of former Creature Comforts frontman Chris Tolle and drummer Jake Cardwell, The Belles boast some of the best songwriting chops in the area, with heavy doses of Neil Young-inspired balladry and a predilection towards early-'70s folk and country music. The band has spent the last couple years touring the world over and releasing a series of well-received EPs on the Eat/Sleep UK label. With The Belles' latest full-length indeterminately shelved, Tolle and Cardwell are staying busy by playing with KC bands Olympic Size and The Caves, respectively.
Superargo 2:15-2:45
It would be enough if Adam Jeffers (aka Superargo) simply went onstage and pressed "play." The Lawrence-based laptop genie composes cuts that are so intricate, so dense and so satisfying that he could phone it in on any giving night and he'd still be a shoo-in for the new posterboy position in the Aphex Twin camp. Yet there's so much more to a Superargo show: projections of locally filmed skits, Jeffers' patented "flailing jerk" dance and (of course) his endearing dance companion Skullface.

Don't wanna be Captain Obvious here, but is this event actually ON A HILL outside the Lied Center, or are they breaking tradition and holding it inside - hard to imagine that, but description of event doesn't distinguish the deets.
