"Bleeding Kansas" with Death Cab for Cutie

and Broken Social Scene / Keane / Chromeo / Mates of State / Secret Machines / Murder by Death / Boy Kill Boy / Walter Meego / Flosstradamus / and many more

Burcham Park

At long last the rich (if increasingly distant) concert history at the beautiful outdoor venue known as Burcham Park is revived on a grand scale with this inaugural "Bleeding Kansas." The festival is conceived as an independent music and arts gathering that incorporates activism and community integrity while highlighting the culture, music and art found in NE Kansas, as well as powerhouse national acts like Death Cab, BSS, Keane, Chromeo and many more. If you're not already familiar with these bands, suffice it to say the nearly $40 sticker price is a steal for this show, which you'll no doubt remember for many years as one of the best to go down in Lawrence - thanks in no small part to the beautiful venue, the expansive shady grounds of Burcham Park on the Kaw.Tickets are available at the Love Garden for the flat ticket fee. There the festival costs $37.50 (cash only), which side-steps the service charge of $7.75 per ticket (for credit, convenience, etc.) that Ticketmaster charges.

And/or enter for a chance to WIN TICKETS to the festival! (If you win and you've already bought tickets, odds are you can recoup at most of your money at the gate).

"When John Brown stretched forth his arm the sky was cleared. The time for compromises was gone the armed hosts of freedom stood face to face over the chasm of a broken Union and the clash of arms was at hand. The South staked all upon getting possession of the Federal Government, and failing to do that, drew the sword of rebellion and thus made her own, and not Brown's, the lost cause of the century." Frederick DouglassThe years of 1854-1861 were a turbulent time in Kansas territory. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 established the territorial boundaries of Kansas and Nebraska and opened the land to legal settlement. It allowed the residents of these territories to decide by popular vote whether their state would be free or slave. This concept of self-determination was called 'popular sovereignty'. In Kansas, people on all sides of this controversial issue flooded the territory, trying to influence the vote in their favor. Rival territorial governments, election fraud, and squabbles over land claims all contributed to the violence of this era.The presumption that all men were created equal and the constitutionally protected right to own another person was to meet a violent reconciliation in Kansas. As the world watched, "Bleeding Kansas" became the battleground for the soul of a Nation. Three months after Kansas was admitted into the union as a free state in 1861, the Civil War began.Main Stage2:00-2:30 - Aberdeen City2:45-3:15 - Lake Trout3:30-4:00 - Boy Kill Boy4:15-4:45 - Murder By Death5:15-6:00 - Mates of State6:30-7:30 - Broken Social Scene8:00-9:00 - Keane9:30-11:00 - Death Cab For CutieAd Astra Stage2:15-2:45 - Ad Astra Per Aspera3:00-3:30 - Fourth of July3:45-4:15 - Conner4:30-5:00 - Langhorne Slim5:15-5:45 - Flosstradamus5:55-6:25 - Walter Meego6:30-6:50 - Powerful Seahorse7:05-7:50 - Chromeo8:05-8:45 - The Black Angels9:05-10:00 - The Secret Machines10:10-11:00 - The Juan Mac CleanKJHK Local Stage1:45-2:15 - The Terrordactyls2:30-3:00 - Boo and Boo Too3:15-3:45 - Kelpie4:00-4:30 - Davan4:45-5:15 - Approach5:30-6:00 - The Armory6:15-6:45 - Dead Girls Ruin Everything7:00-7:30 - Ghosty7:45-8:15 - Appleseed CastAfterpartiesThe party doesn't have to stop when the festivals over! Is the bleeding ks thing a non-profit event with proceeds from the $37.50 tickets going to the 40 local artists and organizations or will they simply have tents up to hock their wares? How many kansas bands are on the bill?

There are a ton of great bands in this show, but a sticker price of $40 seems a bit steep. I'll still go for damn sure, if for no other reason than in hopes this event lives another year.

But holla to the organizers: next year either bring in a few more bigger bands for that price or drop the sticker a bit. $20 seems more reasonable for this event...assuming you hope to fill that park.

Great idea with all the afterparties, but I don't know if even that justifies $40. Shit, WE'RE POOR. $40 is a new set of tweets in my ride, yo. But like I said, I'll be there and happy you all are pullin some mad weight for the Lawrence scene - just wishin there were some bands like Sleepy Jackson, Arcade Fire (yeah they WERE the flavor of the month a minute ago, but damn they amazing), Iron and Wine, Silver Mt Zion (why not?), Clientele, Danielson (I know they were here recently) Wrens, etc.

BTW where is the rest of the powerhouse local talent? New Amsterdams, Justin Roelofs, White Whale, Truckstop Honeymoon, Black Christmas, Esoteric... I know you can't get EVERYBODY but maybe another stage is in order?

Best of luck in this first year. And hope you can take it to the next level next year.

I hear the Kansas State Police are planning another roadblock for this thing and will be arresting anyone wearing black eyeliner or tight pants.

How tradgic! Unfortunately I will be in Chicago attending Lollapalooza.

EVERYBODY in this damn town ALWAYS bitches about the ticket price for ANY performance, if it's in the double digits. Wah, wah! One of the top reasons I still live in Kansas instead of back East is because it is the absolute cheapest place in America to see great bands play. [citation needed] I'm as poor as the rest of you, but $40 for a festival ticket sounds cheap to me!

Jayhawk Music Festival was only like $12, of course that was 10 years ago

I attended this all-day event and was pleased for the most part, especially with Mates, BSS, Keane, and DCFC...my major dislike was the fact that halfway through the hot day, the bottles water went from $1 to $3....and there was no way to leave and come back so you were stuck there in the heat and you had to either pay the price, or suffer...that was very cruel. Too bad I don't live in Lawrence so I could spend a little more time finding out the proper authorities to complain to....I guess I will just keep that experience in mind as I am debating to buy tickets to any future event. Gotta love those bands though...damn, they were good...
