Joanna Newsom is probably the most distinctive female voice in modern music. Her childlike vocals and fantasyland lyrics have won her both devoted followers and naysayers, but she's undeniably good at crafting extravagant, pastoral compositions rooted in her elegant harp playing. Newsom teamed up with legendary producer Van Dyke Parks for her latest five-song 55 minute epic "Ys."Opener Bill Callahan (of Smog) is an understated indie songwriter with a deep voice and even deeper emotional content. Callahan's minimalist compositions conhabitate with narrative tales of prisoners going swimming and other bizarre miniatures. His affiliation with Chicago's Drag City Records paints him as a musical outsider, but his music and lyrics are as populist as Will Oldham's or Jason Molina's.
