The 940 dance company, the resident dance company of the Lawrence Arts Center, presents First Day/New School, Saturday and Sunday February 11 and 12 at 2:00pm in the center's theatre. Children of all ages are welcome and tickets are $6.50 for students/seniors and $8.50 for adults. The title piece, First Day/New School, is choreographed by Susan Warden, artistic director of the company, and set to music by Meredith Monk. This work features a humorous and poignant look at the day in the life of a teenage girl - her first day at a new school. The piece begins with a solo by the teenager who tries to convince her mother that she is too sick to go to school. She proceeds to school and we see snapshots of classroom boredom, gossip, etc. before she returns home to an irate mother who has reached her limit in a melodramatic solo of frustration. In addition the company will perform other works from their repertoire. Spring Fever is a delightful and amusing love duet that involves two innocent creatures whose hopeful attempts to find love make a humorous movement contrast to the music - a melodramatic operatic duet by Guiseppe Verdi. Tapestry is a joyful visual exploration of the formal classicism of J.S. Bach. The five dancers in red costumes weave the stage space with lines of energy and unending motion, bringing the exquisite tapestry of the 1st movement of Bach's Brandenburg #3 to life. The company will perform Improvisation for the afternoon concert. This improvisation provides the audience with a wonderful opportunity to see the inner workings of dance making and to experience the excitement spontaneous work. The audience has an opportunity to see the dancers create a dance spontaneously that is unique to that audience and that place. For more information, please contact Susan Warden or Candi Baker at (785)843-2787, lacdance@sunflower.com.
