Steve Keene Reception (free nachos)

Student Night @ the Spencer

When: Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: Kansas Union Gallery, 1301 Jayhawk Blvd., Lawrence

Cost: Free

Age limit: All ages

Categories: Art | Opening

Description: Steve Keene's artwork is described as "somewhere between primitivism and mid-20th-century American representational art." But mostly he's known for painting so darn fast! He believes that every person should own an original piece of artwork, and as such, sells his stuff for $3-$5. He's sold over 180,000 paintings, none of which are especially artistically profound, but all of which are subtly unique. He is known for collaborating with bands such as Pavement, Apples In Stereo, and the Silver Jews to create album art, video sets, stage sets and posters. If any of this sounds interesting his website and a 2005 NY Times article should explain things a little more clearly (links below).

KU's Student Union Activities brought him in to be an artist in residence until February 14th so if you can't make it to the reception on Thursday be sure to stop by the gallery some other time.

Free nachos in the house!
