Roughly one year after playing their first show, Lawrence's The Volunteers are celebrating the release of their eponymous debut full-length. The 12-song collection combines indie rock chops with folk sensibilities and sounds remarkably accomplished for such a fledging quartet. Singer/songwriter Tyler Jack Anderson sounds downright happy to be alive, waxing poetic to the warm and fuzzy sounds of acoustic guitar, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer and pedal steel. Not to be pigeonholed as alt-folkies, the group also displays a penchant for Built to Spill-sized guitar solos and actually good harmonies.
The Kinetiks are a ten-ton barrel of fun minus the country music connotations. Frontwoman Spencer Goertz-Giffen pulls off the astounding act of simultaneously dancing, singing and ripping off sizzling guitar leads. She's backed by a funked-up rhythm section that sounds a bit like Peaches but without all the naughty words. The band is currently recording their debut full-length with Jordan Geiger of Minus Story. Go Kinetiks!
