This fall, Signs of Life is offering a free weekly lecture series that showcases some of Lawrence's foremost authorities on excellence in culinary culture. This week's featured speaker is Sula Teller, professional cook and Food Service Manager at The Merc. A vegetarian since age 12, Teller will discuss methods for closing the gap between production and consumption (presumably with some reference to her exquisite home garden).

She's a vegetarian? I am amazed. When I asked about vegan options at the Merc bakery, she said her vision was to make goods that were so delicious that you wouldn't consider asking what was in it.
Even after much effort to clarify that well, that was great, but it *wouldn't go into my mouth* until I knew what was in it, she still didn't seem to understand at all what I was saying.
It is good to know, though, that those operating the Merc's prepared foods & delicatessan are aware of concerns with the meat industry.

yes, the Merc deli has not been overly vegan friendly lately - I can hardly look in the deli case because it's so over-flowing with meat and fish dishes - but they have improved their muffin choices. I've been told to submit comments to their suggestion box and plan to do so more regularly - personally I'm pushing for something other than the same vegan zucchini bread they have offered for years - maybe banana bread occasionally?
They definitely need some more vegan influence around the bakery and deli.
