KU's Kiosk Benefit
with The Volunteers / The Legendary Terrordactyls / The Armory / Stylus
When: Thursday, April 26, 2007, 10 p.m.
Where: The Jackpot Music Hall, 943 Mass., Lawrence
Cost: $5
Age limit: 18+
Description: A benefit show for KU's student art + literature magazine. The twice annual 100-page mag contains the work of many KU poets and short-fiction writers, lovingly adorned by a team of KU graphic designers who devote as much as 30 hours a week to the project. Regarding the local bands scheduled to perform:
Volunteers recently released their debut full-length roughly one year after playing their first show. The 12-song collection combines indie rock chops with folk sensibilities and sounds remarkably accomplished for such a fledging quartet. Singer/songwriter Tyler Jack Anderson sounds downright happy to be alive, waxing poetic to the warm and fuzzy sounds of acoustic guitar, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer and pedal steel. Not to be pigeonholed as alt-folkies, the group also displays a penchant for Built to Spill-sized guitar solos and actually good harmonies.
The Legendary Terrordactyls play their own brand of noisy, guitar-driven, punk-fused indie rock, taking cues from Sonic Youth, Pavement, Dinosaur Jr, and My Bloody Valentine. The band has been around in one form or another for about five years, through a number of breaks and line-up changes. The current line-up includes John Bergwell (Beekeeping) on bass and vocals, Nick Bergwell (Fourth Of July, We Are The Blackmarket) on guitar and lead vocals, Brendan Costello (Save the Whales) on guitar and vocals and Gaurav Bashyakarla (Boo and Boo Too ) on drums. In addition to playing shows around Lawrence and the Kansas City area, The 'Dactyls are currently accumulating an arsenal of demos in preparation for a 2007 release.
The Armory is a newish rock band from Lawrence with a blend of post-punk, indie rock and shoegaze flavors. The group recently released a homemade six-song debut EP that features some chest-shaking fuzz bass, warped guitar effects and a couple genuinely moving hooks.
