Austin's White Ghost Shivers revels in string band music from the '20s and '30s, mixing early jazz, hokum, vaudeville, ragtime, gypsy swing and hillbilly music in equal measure. Looking the part as well as they play it, the band ups the ante with bawdy lyrics and period flapper dress. They've shared the stage with local faves Split Lip Rayfield many a time, presumably because both acts scare the bejeezus out of anyone who listens to contemporary country radio. Lawrence's RedLefty mixes up rare setlists of blues, swing, country swing, ragtime and even a bit o' klezmer. Lead vocalist Dan Rempel sings like an old soul from beyond the grave, mouth harpist Chris Millspaugh channels the spirit of Little Walter, and trombonist Nate Craft adds a Big Easy vibe to the proceedings. The band also acts as the "bar outreach" segment of the Americana Music Academy, where most of the Lefties teach.
