Sparta / Straylight Run / Lovedrug

Following the 2001 split of At the Drive-In, Jim Ward built Sparta with bandmates Paul Hinojos (who would later leave for Mars Volta) and Tony Hajjar. The eventual quartet's dynamic sound walks the line between punk and soaring modern rock, embracing anthemic choruses and a populist approach that's seemingly the anithesis to the Mars Volta's noodly prog rock. The group's latest LP "Threes" charted new ground with midtempo ballads reminiscent of Coldplay and U2 and delay-drenched contributions from new guitarist Keeley Davis. Doors at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m.
