On first listen, Kansas City's In the Pines fit neatly into Appalachian-influenced Americana territory with their tearful violins and brooding ballads. But further listening reveals an affinity for modern-day tunesmiths like Sufjan Stevens and Will Oldham; an instrumentally rich sound fleshed out with acoustic and electric guitars, acoustic bass, violin, viola, drum kits and multiple vocalists. Openers and fellow KC pot-stirrers American Catastrophe recall country gothic fixtures like Sixteen Horsepower and Jay Munly, blazing up a virile cacophony with deep-voiced singer Shaun Hamontree at the helm.
