Eric Bachmann / In the Pines

Record Bar

In the '90s, Eric Bachmann's Archers of Loaf were the wild men of the indie rock circuit, whipping up a rip-roaring racket keyed in on Bachmann's mighty voice and some of the weirdest guitar sounds the world had ever witnessed. Somewhere along the way, the basketball-sized frontman mellowed out, channeling his energies into the decidedly less earsplitting Crooked Fingers. The new venture allowed Bachmann's skillful guitar fingerpicking and room-silencing voice to take center stage, so it's only fitting that he'd eventually whittle things down to just those two elements. Saddle Creek Records picked up the tab for his first eponymous release "To the Races," which he recorded largely by himself in a makeshift hotel studio.
