Description: The Department of Music & Dance and the division of jazz studies is pleased to present John Williams' "My Fair Lady." The concert will feature renowned guest musicians Gary Foster and Steve Houghton and is part of Festival of the Arts, a month-long celebration dedicated to Murphy Hall's 50th anniversary.
The first half of the concert will feature the KU Jazz Singers, performing several arrangements written by KU graduate Kerry Marsh. KU Jazz Ensemble I will take stage for the remainder of the first half, performing "Choro Dancado," the first movement from Grammy Award-winning composer Marisa Schneider's suite "Three Romances." The second half of the program will feature "My Fair Lady," arranged for singers and jazz orchestra by John Williams.
"My Fair Lady" will feature numerous soloists and guest musicians, including internationally-renowned jazz drummer Steve Houghton, who serves as musical director for the piece, and Gary Foster, L.A.-based saxophonist and a prominent woodwind and jazz artist. Foster is also a KU fine arts graduate, receiving his BM in 1959 and BME in 1961. The vocal soloists for "My Fair Lady" include KU music students George Brahler (tenor) and Kelsie Clark (alto). Additional faculty guest soloists and musicians include Vince Gnojek, KU professor of saxophone, Steve Leisring, assistant professor of trumpet, and Michael Davidson, assistant professor of trombone. All soloists and guest musicians will be accompanied by KU's award-winning Jazz Ensemble I, under the direction of Dan Gailey, KU Director of Jazz Studies.
Williams' suite for soloists and jazz ensembles was originally written for and recorded by Shelly Manne's big band on Capitol Records, and featured vocalists Jack Sheldon and Irene Kral.
