with Laura Gibson

When: Friday, April 25, 2008, 7 p.m.

Where: Liberty Hall, 644 Mass., Lawrence

Cost: $15.50

Age limit: 18+

Categories: Folk, Rock, Singer/songwriter

Description: Colin Meloy is best known for his role as lead singer for the folk rock band the Decemberists, but as of late he's taken to performing solo. His sense of timing and distinctive, sharp voice—as well as his affection for vagabonds, lost boys, and old soldiers who inhabit his lyrics—has set him apart and made him a success among singer-songwriters. On past tours he has released limited-run EPs featuring covers of Morrissey and British folk artist Shirley Cooke, and he continues this tradition in 2008 with covers of soul legend Sam Cooke's music.

Also featured on the Sam Cooke EP is Laura Gibson, whose smoky voice has been favorably noted by the New York Times and NPR's All Songs Considered.
