with Ample Branches / Katlyn Conroy

Jackpot Music Hall

Berry is a Chicago-via-St. Louis band that creates off-kilter rock compositions that strike a balance between melody and experimentation. The group's MySpace links to a bevy of free material as well as a covers EP of friends' bands. From the home studio of a tiny two-bedroom apartment at 11th and Tennessee to local stages, Ample Branches has grown into one of Lawrence's brightest new bands during the last couple years. The group's 16-song debut "True Vine" merits an honorary degree from the academy of innovative home recording-it would be "lo-fi" if only if weren't so well produced. Fans of homespun indie bands like The Microphones, The Books and Animal Collective will dig the collection immediately, but its more populist touchstones-The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Sufjan Stevens-lend "True Vine" an across-the-universe appeal. The group is currently working on a follow-up at Black Lodge Studios.Lawrence songwriter Katlyn Conroy is taking a breather from her band Another Holiday to release a solo album. Taking cues from personal faves like Kimya Dawson, Jenny Lewis and Death Cab for Cutie, Conroy sings sweet, hummable melodies with hushed dynamics and twinkling keyboards.
