Whit Bones Art Talk

in conjunction with "Overcoming the Fears That Overcome Us..."

Fresh Produce Art Collective co-founder Whit Bones opens his first solo show with an installation-a playful narrative about a guy with an incredible fear. Bones says the fear acts as a boundary on his subject's life, one that takes great effort to overcome. It's a metaphor that most should be able to identify with.More from Bones: The show is about limits, or more specifically, our own personal fears that limit us. I'm not talking about the boogie man or Dracula but real world fears like the fear of being in front of a lot of people. Fears that could get in your way of doing something you really want to do. This show is a metaphor. The installation tells a story about a man with an incredible fear that stands in his way of having a basic functioning life. What you will see is the outcome. The measures he took to have that success despite having the limits of such a great fear. I think everyone will be able to find that fear inside of them, and maybe a few of them will be inspired to overcome that fear. This installation wont be your standard art show. The space will be the work of art. The way your walk through it and interact with it will tell the story. Each person will have a different experience. We are't going to do all the work for the viewer. Things wont be labeled "art", there will be more searching involved. Artists' statement:"As artists we find our visual vocabulary and constantly refine our rhythmic syntax until we are fully equipped with our own artistic vernacular. I speak in materials. My use of laminated wood, caste metal and rope reflect the simplicity I enjoy in life. I enjoy wood for it's inherent properties, formability and conceptual straightforwardness. Metals are strong, visually stunning and, like the forms they mimic, natural. Rope has entered my work as a binding agent. The ultimate, recognizable and utilitarian tool connect various forms to create seemingly functional objects. I try to use as few words as possible to say so much. Beyond material I am interested in the form and the object. I create forms that alter perception and objects that play with functionality. There is an apparent recognizability to my pieces that elaborate to challenge the perception of the viewer. Wood melts, tools have unfamiliar functions and toys require the imagination. My work combines the concrete stability with the surreal and unknown."
