"Boogie on the Blacktop" with Poi Dog Pondering

also featuring Garrett Nordstrom Situation / Apollo 13

Downtown Lawrence

This FREE outdoor concert in the lot at Ninth and New Hampshire streets features headliners Poi Dog Pondering along with Garrett Nordstrom Situation and Apollo 13.Poi Dog Pondering has explored just about every genre of music during its two-decade career, from worldbeat to electronica to Americana. The Chicago collective's latest album "7" is a soulful rock record that should bolster the group's already eclectic stage show. Bandleader Frank Orrall has explored classical and electronic projects in recent years, but the songs that compose "7" signal a return to a sound that's more in line with Van Morrison or Boz Scaggs.Garrett Nordstrom Situation is the vehicle for Kansas City singer/songwriter Garrett Nordstrom. The current lineup is made up of drummer Scot Eldridge, bassist Justin Rogers, multi-instrumentalist Rich "Willy" Wood, vocalists Jen Johnson and Meshell Nelson, lead guitarist Patrick Goodwin and violinist Amory Bottorff. The group's music spans R&B, soul, uptempo rockers and folksy instrumentals.Mixing modern rock and electronica in equal measure, Lawrence's Apollo 13 answers the eternally burning question: What would it sound like if Lenny Kravitz collaborated with The Chemical Brothers? The group features the "American Idol"-ready vocals of former Band That Saved the World frontman Shannon Savoie as well as top-notch musicianship from bassist Will Dinkel, guitarist/keyboardist Mike MacFarland and drummer Danny Rojas.Performance Schedule:Apollo 13: 5 p.m. 6 p.m.Garrett Nordstrom Situation: 6:30 p.m. 8 p.m.Poi Dog Pondering: 8:30 p.m. 10:30 p.m.* No Outside Beverages or Coolers* No Lawnchairs* No Pets
