KJHK's annual Jazz in the Park event has less to do with jazz this year and more to do with Afrobeat (Chicago Afrobeat Project), Hammond-organ funk (The Yards) and old-timey blues and swing (RedLefty). Headliners Chicago Afrobeat Project carry forward the legacy of the late Fela Kuti: a percussive hybrid of African polyrhythms and James Brown funk. Lawrence's The Yards pursue a funk-jam-jazz path reminiscent of Medeski, Martin & Wood and The Meters, while bearded homeboys RedLefty play to the speakeasy contingent with dusty blues, New Orleans jazz, western swing, ragtime and even a bit o' klezmer. The fun continues into the evening with a 7 p.m. Jazzhaus show featuring Floyd the Barber and another set from Chicago Afrobeat Project.
