Description: Submitted press release: The award-winning documentary "Kansas vs. Darwin" will have its Lawrence premiere at the Lawrence Arts Center in connection with the Summer Youth Theatre production of "Inherit the Wind." The film, which covers the 2005 state school board hearings on evolution, has played several festivals and seems to be attracting more attention as school board elections loom this fall.

"I originally selected it to be shown to the cast of the play," said Ric Averill, Drama Program Director at the center, "and then (filmmaker) Jeff Tamblyn and I realized that this would be the local premiere, so we decided to make it public and invite everyone. I want the cast to understand the depth and importance of the controversy over teaching evolution, and Kansas vs. Darwin really shows the emotion and the ferocity of the politics around this issue."

"A lot is happening right now with the film," said Tamblyn, who directed, co-produced and co-wrote Kansas vs. Darwin with local editor Mark von Schlemmer. "We'll be shown on KTWU later this summer, and we're hooking up with some political groups who want to use the film to raise money and awareness about the school board elections. We're also playing our first international festival, the ReelHeART International Film Festival, in Toronto, in June. And, we've been invited to the Temecula Film Festival in California in September."

Kansas vs. Darwin had its world premiere last September at the Kansas International Film Festival and opened the Tallgrass Film Festival in Wichita. It also won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Secret City Film Festival in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, about an hour from Dayton, the town where the Scopes Monkey Trial was held in 1925. That trial is the basis for the play "Inherit the Wind" by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, which will be presented later this summer at the arts center with a cast of young people, directed by Averill.

Tickets to Tuesday night's show are $5 and can be purchased at the Lawrence Arts Center. Summer Youth Theatre's "Inherit the Wind" cast members can also pick up their free ticket vouchers at the Arts Center.

DVD's of the film can also be purchased for home viewing at the film's website, www.kansasvdarwin.com
