From the artist: Public bathrooms are contested space for members of the queer community—they are simultaneously a place of eroticism for public sex and a place of gender policing. In this new series, "The Water Closet: Portraits of Queers in Public Bathrooms," photographer Ailecia Ruscin (who takes nightlife shots for lawrence.com) presents 24 new portraits of members of Lawrence's LGBT community. By locating each portrait in a local public bathroom, the show seeks to conceptually remind viewers that public space is contested space, and that for many queers, especially for those who play with gender, public bathrooms can be a place of intense gender scrutiny. The show is simultaneously a celebration of queer diversity, as the artist intentionally brings together diverse models representing each letter in LGBT.The show will be up the entire month of February both upstairs and downstairs at Henry's coffee shop and bar.
