Neko Case possesses a golden country voice big enough to bogart the Grand Ole Opry stage — except that she's unlikely to play there anytime soon. The Canadian-born singer prefers more left-of-the-dial material, but that spectrum is wide enough to encompass her duties in The New Pornographers as well as her resplendent solo recordings. Case's third solo album "Middle Cyclone" doesn't disappoint — a whipsmart collection of tunes that showcase her belted vocals and vivid lyrics about tornadoes and "man-eaters."

Opener Jason Lytle is the former frontman of Grandaddy, the keyboard-lovin' indie band that disbanded in 2006. His new solo disc "Yours Truly, the Commuter" sounds suspiciously like a Grandaddy record with its atmospheric production and soft-spoken melodies.
