The Prairie Trio, Masters of American Music - Philip Aaberg, Eugene Friesen and Darol Anger, all master musicians in their own solo careers and an incredible force when working together will be in concert at the Lawrence Arts Center on March 5th at 7:30pm. Several workshops are being planned in conjunction with the performance.
The Lawrence Arts Center is pleased to be part of this amazing Prairie Trio Project as an outreach Kansas site and to bring these artists to Lawrence. This project was designed by Chamber Music at the Barn and the Fisch Bowl, Inc., both of Wichita, and made possible in part by grants from the Kansas Arts Commission & the National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpieces program.
The performance will feature a reprise of Headfirst in the Blue Fields of Grace composed by Aaberg and performed by the guest trio along with Kansas musicians, the Fairmont String Quartet and the Foofaraw Woodwind Quintet.
Additional music performed by Aaberg, Anger, and Friesen will be selected from the following: 1) other original works, 2) possible reinterpretations of 20th century chamber music works by Gershwin, Copland, et al, replacing the classical style with vernacular and blues-influenced approach, forsaking non e of the precision and virtuosity, and #) possible works from the early jazz tradition (Beiderbecke, Venuti, Armstrong) and American folk and string band tradition (Bill Monroe, Stanley Brothers, fiddle music) developed in a chamber music context.
