Boris / Russian Circles / Life & Times

Japanese cult favorite sludge/doom rock trio Boris takes its name from a song on The Melvins’ “Bullhead” album. The nearly 20-year-old act also has a lot in common with the grunge godfathers musically, including a fondness for heavily down-tuned guitar tones and exceedingly slow tempos. But Boris also incorporates elements drawn from other sources — psychedelic rock, punk, noise, minimalism — that weave into the band’s massive conceptual projects.
