Yoga at the Solstice!

Hollowell Easement at Clinton Lake

The Kansas Land Trust (KLT)—a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving Kansas lands of ecological, agricultural, historic, scenic, and recreational significance—will mark the arrival of summer with two “Easement Experiences” on a recently conserved Douglas County property. Local resident Joseph G. Hollowell, Jr. generously donated a conservation easement permanently protecting the property to KLT.

A 90-minute yoga session, led by respected Lawrence instructor Alice Steuerwald, begins at 8:00 a.m. General admission is $15 and $10 for KLT members.

At 10:00 a.m., instructor David Hann will conduct an hour-long Tai Chi class. General admission is $10 and $5 for KLT members.

“The natural beauty of this area is conducive to both celebration and contemplation,” says Jason Fizell, KLT’s Executive Director. “Hosting these yoga and tai chi sessions here is a fitting way to usher in the summer and to acknowledge the rejuvenating role nature can play all year long.”

Alice Steuerwald’s passion for body and spirit healing was sparked at age 16, when she worked as a restorative aide in a nursing home. After studying to become a strength trainer and body worker, Alice expanded her skills by traveling to Central America to learn spiritual healing techniques. She has combined this knowledge with principles of yoga in her sessions. Alice’s classes at the Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence Athletic Club, and the BeMoved Studio introduce students to pranayama, strength training, micro-movement, and a variety of yoga styles.

Lawrence native David Hann first took up Tai Chi in 1997 and has been teaching both short and long forms of Tai Chi for nine years. He has periodically demonstrated the short form at the Chinese New Year programs at KU and has shown the sword form of this discipline at the Johnson County Public Library. David also leads Tai Chi practices in the South Park Gazebo on Monday mornings. For David, “Inhaling the fragrance of the flowers while doing Tai Chi is a great way to ease into the day.”
